ohn Horatio “Jack” Crawford was born in Grenville, Quebec, Canada in 1879. He was a veteran of the Boer War and immigrated to the United States in 1910. In 1911 he met and married Nellie May Heilman, who was born in Washougal, Washington in 1892.
Jack and Nellie came to Anchorage in 1918 and moved into a newly built log cabin. Jack had obtained work as a crane engineer with the Alaska Railroad and continued with them until he retired in 1951. Nellie, who was a long-time employee of Providence Hospital, retired in 1949.
Nellie and Jack had two children, Leroy (1913-1974) and Bertha Crawford Meier (1915-1988). Nellie Heilman Crawford died in 1957 and is buried in Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. John H. Crawford died in 1964, and his place of burial is unknown.
